Thanks to legal gambling establishments around the country and online casinos and sports betting, reports of illegal bookmaking operations have dramatically decreased in the last 7 years.
With tribal casinos in almost every state and access to online casinos and sports books in almost every home in America, underground gambling rings have been taking themselves out of the game. In the last 7 years the number of bookmaking operations around the country has dropped by nearly 65 percent.
This report released last week by a group privately commissioned to research the affect of legalized gambling on organized illegal gambling operations.
What they found was that people are less inclined to gambling with a bookie when they can go up to an hour away and gamble at a legal casino.
The study also showed that since the October 13th passing of the unlawful internet gambling ban, business for bookies has began to pick up again, in areas that do not have legalized gambling.
When I spoke with someone who uses the services of a bookie they said they would much rather be able to gamble online or in a casino where they know they are safe, because some of the bookies work from unsafe neighborhoods, and that he has been robed twice on his way to place bets.
Illegal gambling is still taking place in the USA with all the proceeds going to criminal organizations, but with legalized gambling profits and winnings can be taxed and the money can be used for social programs such as Universal Healthcare to better the country.
The only way to make sure money made from gambling does not reach the hands of the criminals is to legalize online gambling and regulate the industry.
